“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.”

What Academia Found about Scouting and Eagle Scouts

Baylor University Research Finds Eagle Scouts Have Positive, Lasting Influence on American Society. Nationwide study shows those who attain Scouting’s highest rank enhance youth’s values, ethics, decision making, relationships and personal development. Find the full report here, Merit Beyond the Badges: Eagle Scouts in Later Life.

The University of Edinburgh determined that adults who were former Scouts as a youth tend to be healthier in adulthood. The university, following a longitudinal study of adults born between 1950 and 1956, found that those “Children who took part in (organizations) such as the Scouts … were more likely to report higher levels of general health at age 50, compared to their peers.”  The University of Edinburgh’s data came from The Aberdeen Children of the 1950s study, conducted by the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. The study captured data from more than 12,000 families with kids born in the 1950s in Aberdeen and looked at how they lived, what they did for fun, how they did in school and generally how healthy they were. At least some of them, it turns out, were Scouts. In the 1990s, a study followed up with more than 7,000 of those kids-turned-adults to see how their lives were turning out. Again, they were asked about their current health, along with many other topics. The same group of people have contributed to multiple tests in the years since. The goal of the original study was to discover the causes of learning disabilities. But the data is so expansive and so wide ranging that other researchers have used it to investigate all kinds of other aspects of life. The benefits of Scouting really do last a lifetime!

Eagle Scout Project Purpose:

“In addition to providing service and fulfilling the part of the Scout Oath, “To help other people at all times,” one of the primary purposes of the Eagle Scout Service Project is to learn leadership skills, or to improve or demonstrate leadership skills they already have. Related to this are important lessons in project management and taking responsibility for a significant accomplishment.” –Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, 2021.
